On Saturday, October 16, cabinet members of the Maldives government held a meeting on the bottom of the ocean to raise awareness of climate change and the drastic effects it is expected to have on the Maldives, the world’s lowest-lying country.

Underwater Cabinet Meeting Held in the Maldives
Since being elected, President Mohammed Nasheed has campaigned hard to increase awareness of the Maldives’ strife concerning climate change. If sea levels continue to rise at today’s rates, the Maldives will be submerged by water before the end of the 21st Century. The Maldives is even in a position where, as a country, it needs to begin looking for and purchasing new, higher islands, on which to relocate when the islands are finally submerged.
President Nasheed has been a certified scuba diver for many years, but most other cabinet members had to take scuba diving lessons and also learn scuba diving sign language so they could effectively communicate underwater.
